Writing Contest

GR.7-9 SHORT STORY CONTEST短篇故事最佳写作奖:Lillian Li,"The Black Death"。

“The Black Death” impressed me with the author’s ability to express the emotional drama of a tragic moment in a young girl’s life. It clearly showed the young writer’s ability to paint pictures with words, in both the description of Eliana’s relationship with her father and in her pain at his succumbing to the plague.

This short piece is clearly a vignette from a proposed longer novel for young readers that I think teenage girls in particular would find very attractive. Eliana has the makings of a strong character that they would identify closely with.

This poem goes beyond simply a good comprehension of meter and rhyme. Just like the subject of the work, the winning poem "Green" connects with many senses and ideas. It touches on whimsy and the mundane, sensation and wonder.

Sarah Pan,“The Good Doggo ”

The Good Doggo” was a good read! In this charming story, animals are people. That’s always a fine premise, and it happens to be largely true.

Baxter the dog, together with his pals Maggy and Wallie -- this writer has a gift for naming his/her characters! -- have an endearing little adventure in under 450 words. A tiny yellow canary drops out of the sky -- okay, why not, this is fiction! -- and it’s badly hurt, the poor thing. This is just so that Baxter can do his good deed for the day. Which he does, he sets that canary right.

Hey, this story even has a good moral. Thanks, young writer! You brightened my day. Congratulations!

Ella Tao, "The World a Windown Away"

评委点评:“The world a window away” has a strong poetic premise, that of watching the world outside from behind a pane of glass. For me, it very nicely captured the poet’s thoughts as (s)he sat in his/her room, immersed in a pensive mood. That’s the state of mind where poetry begins to happen.

The poem captures a few minutes in the writer’s life -- fresh snow, shimmering sunlight, a neighbour boy with a basketball , some random news items -- and sets them in memory like a snapshot in a photo frame.

Keep on writing; you have sharp observational skills. Congratulations!
